Introduction

GALILEO usage statistics include counts of the following actions:

Searches
Full Text Views
Citation Views
Links Chosen
GALILEO Sessions

Instructions

The choices for selection criteria can be made in any order with the exception of the Dates, Institutions, and Databases. Those three must be selected in that order for all cases except the Zoom and Scroll graph which does not need the Dates selection and therefore removes it from view. See the section below for usage tips on the Dates, Institutions, and Databases list boxes.

Select the Type of Output

There are two types of outputs currently available for the user.

Graph -- various portrayals of the data graphically
Report -- a grid presentation suitable for export/import into other applications

Graphs

Select the Type of Graph and Settings

There are three types of graphs available for the user with a couple of options in addition to the choice.

Cluster Bar (with or without Trend lines) -- statistics will be clustered for a given month, optional trend lines will show trending
Single Bar w/Table -- statistics are lumped together into a single bar which will provide a table of the components broken out when mouse hovers over bar
Zoom and Scroll (with Bars or Lines) -- statistics are shown from earliest to most recent, most recent year is shown first, several controls are available within the graph to view data exactly as you want

Reports

Select the Type of Report and Settings

There are three types of reports available for the user with specific options below the report type selections.

Single Institution (#1) -- shows statistics across the page as columns and databases are listed down the page
Multi-Institution (#2) -- shows databases across the page as columns and institutions are listed down the page
Database (#3) -- shows institutions across the page as columns and databases are listed down the page

Some of the following options are not applicable to every report and they will be grayed out (disabled) when not applicable.

Row Totaling
Column Totaling
List Months Separately
List Institutions Separately
List Databases Separately
Show Report Settings

Exporting Reports

After generating a report the user can choose to export the data in that report to a local file on their computer. There are four delimiter choices available:

Comma
Semicolon
Vertical Bar
Tab

Additional columns may be added for easier data management in a spreadsheet environment, but for the most part the exported data will closely match the layout of the data on screen.

Selection Criteria

Select Date(s)

To create a statistics report or a graph, the user must select the period of time (in months or years) that the output is to cover. Choose the type of date period first by clicking on the Months ro Years radio button. Note that the list of months can be displayed plain or with the Fiscal Years grouped. The starting month of the Fiscal Year can be changed using the selection provided when Fiscal Years are displayed. The years displayed are calendar years (not fiscal). Each selection action within the month/year list will cause a new set of institutions to populate the list box below. Multiple months/years may be selected consecutively or not.

Select month(s)/year(s) by clicking in the list box under Dates:, scrolling as necessary to the desired month(s)/year(s).
To select multiple months/years, there are two methods: one using the shift key and the other using the control key.
To select multiple consecutive months/years, click on the first month/year while holding down the shift key. Continue holding the shift key while you scroll to the last month/year desired and click that month/year. Release the shift key. The months/years you selected and all those in between should appear highlighted.
To select multiple months/years that are not necessarily consecutive, click the first month/year while holding down the control key. Continue holding the control key while you scroll to each desired month/year, clicking each of them in turn. When all of the desired months/years are selected, release the control key. The months/years you selected should appear highlighted.
Note: this method for selecting multiple items in a check box applies to the Netscape/IE/FireFox web browsers running in Microsoft Windows. Other browsers in other environments may provide different means to select multiple options.

Select Institution(s)

The next step is to select an institution or institution group by clicking the appropriate name in the Institutions: list box. The list may contain individual institutions or groups (consortiums) depending on the "Show Groups" checkbox. To select a group or an institution it must be moved from the left list box to the right list box. There are several ways to do this.

Select a single institution by clicking in the left list box and then clicking on the button between the boxes labeled ">>"
Select multiple institutions by clicking in the left list box using the same technique as described above for multiple selections and then clicking on the button between the boxes labeled ">>"
Select one institution at a time by double-clicking in the left list box on the desired institution
Select all institution(s) by clicking on the button between the boxes labeled "all"
Deselect a single institution by clicking in the right list box and then clicking on the button between the boxes labeled "<<"
Deselect multiple institutions by clicking in the right list box using the same technique as described above for multiple selections and then clicking on the button between the boxes labeled "<<"
Deselect one institution at a time by double-clicking in the right list box on the desired institution
Deselect all institution(s) by clicking on the button between the boxes labeled "none"

Select Database(s)

The next step is to select a database or database group by clicking the appropriate name in the Databases: list box. The list may contain individual databases or groups of databases depending on the "Show Groups" checkbox. To select a group or an institution it must be moved from the left list box to the right list box. There are several ways to do this.

Select a single database by clicking in the left list box and then clicking on the button between the boxes labeled ">>"
Select multiple databases by clicking in the left list box using the same technique as described above for multiple selections and then clicking on the button between the boxes labeled ">>"
Select one database at a time by double-clicking in the left list box on the desired database

Deselect one database at a time by double-clicking in the right list box on the desired database
Deselect all database(s) by clicking on the button between the boxes labeled "none"

Select the Types of Statistics

As stated in the introduction there are various actions for which statistics are available. Once you have selected the dates, institutions and databases, the next step is to select which of these actions you want to report. To select an action, click the appropriate check box (or click multiple check boxes) for:

Searches
Full Text Views
Citation Views
Links Chosen
GALILEO Sessions

Note that all or none can be selected using the links provided.

Undoing or Clearing Settings

To undo any settings you affected, and to restore everything to the default settings, click the Reset All link. This will not only clear your onscreen settings but it will also clear any saved settings in your browser (cookies).
